Frances Dal Chele was born in the United States in 1950 and lives in Paris. Her French language and literature university studies lead her first to France in 1978 and then to photography. Essentially self-taught, she has been a free-lance photographer since 1986, working both in B&W and color. Initially photography for her was synonymous with reportage, photography that bears witness, denounces. In 1995, she began to explore a more intimate photographic language, distanced from reality, drawing on out-of-focus photography’s rich palette in order to transcend reality. The issue of identity runs through her subjects. Her patiently-shaped photographic universe travels back and forth between a subjective documentary approach to raise awareness of issues and an intuitive approach to suggest the enigma of places and beings.
